10 Pilates Beginner Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Pilates looks simple, but small technique errors can slow your progress or cause discomfort. Here are the ten most common beginner mistakes and exactly how to fix them.
- Moving too fast. Pilates is about control. Fix: count 2 seconds out, 2 seconds back.
- Holding your breath. Fix: exhale on the effort, inhale on the return.
- Using too much resistance. Heavy bands pull you out of alignment. Fix: start light and progress weekly.
- Arching the lower back. Fix: gently draw your belly button in and keep ribs down.
- Shrugging the shoulders. Fix: think "shoulders away from ears" in every move.
- Locking knees and elbows. Fix: keep a soft bend to protect joints.
- Skipping the warm-up. Fix: two minutes of breathing, pelvic tilts and cat-cow.
- Doing too much too soon. Fix: 15 minutes, 3–5 times a week, then build.
- Comparing with Instagram. Fix: follow a structured plan, like our 28-day plan.
- Ignoring pain. Fix: stop if something hurts sharply and get professional advice. Read Pilates for back pain.
Equipment-specific tips
- Place your board on a flat, non-slip surface.
- Check bands and handles are secure before each session.
- Use the knee pad for kneeling work.
- Keep gliding moves slow; control the return as much as the push.
